Tooth erosion happens when the protective layer on the outside of the teeth wears away, and it's an astonishingly common problem. Approximately 16% of people in the United States suffer from tooth erosion, making America the third worst nation in the world for the problem. Thankfully, this common problem can be prevented by following these tips.

Limit Acidic Drinks and Foods

There are several foods and drinks that have a higher acid content than others. Citrus fruits, fruit juices, and carbonated drinks like pop are all high in acid, which can slowly wear away at tooth enamel. Limit how much of these you enjoy daily.

Wait to Brush After Acidic Foods

Now that you know how harmful acidic foods and drinks can be, it's tempting to brush them immediately after enjoying them. However, that can do more harm than good. The acid can temporarily soften tooth enamel, and brushing too soon can make it worse. Using mouthwash too soon can spread the acid throughout the entire mouth. Instead, wait 30-60 minutes before brushing.

Practice Good Oral Hygiene

Practicing good oral hygiene isn't just for days you'll be heading to the dentist. Instead, you should be brushing at least twice daily. Mouthwash can be helpful, but dentists don't say that it's necessary. They do recommend flossing regularly after brushing to remove excess plaque, though.

Use a Fluoride Mouthwash

When children are younger, it's common practice to put additional fluoride on their teeth at checkups. That's because fluoride can help strengthen the enamel on the teeth, preventing decay and reducing damage from acidic foods. Fluoride mouthwashes are available at almost any local store and can be used by anyone. They also provide cavity-fighting benefits, such as reducing the amount of plaque and bacteria.

Regular Dental Visits

Dentists often recommend yearly or bi-annual checkups, and you shouldn't skip them. This is an opportunity for dentists to spot problems before they get worse. A dentist will be able to tell you if there are areas you can improve upon, such as specific spots you may be missing while brushing. This can help prevent tooth erosion.

Taking care of your teeth using a healthy diet and proper oral hygiene can help prevent tooth erosion by protecting the enamel on your teeth. Contact us to schedule your dentist appointment today!
